From the Forum — Issue #70

From the ForumWelcome to the latest installment of From the Forum. In this series, guest blogger Alex Jackson highlights outstanding threads from the Corona Forum. 1. Get those icons out the door!

We’ve all been there: you need to get your app out the door, but you’re spinning your wheels, creating all of the various icons and launch images needed for all of the app stores out there. Going back and forth between your image editing software and getting all of the assets ready and uploaded is a chore. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could simplify one of those steps?

Corona developer Rene Aye has shared a template that streamlines the process considerably. It’s a nice shortcut that really only has one caveat: Adobe Photoshop is required to employ the template. Head down to the original thread to check it out for yourself!

2. We lost the ability to touch; time to make our own rules!

Creating our wildest dreams in app form is an empowering endeavor. In Corona, developing mobile apps is easier than it’s ever been. One of the most powerful weapons in our arsenal is the Touch API, which of course forms the backbone to mobile app interactivity. It’s used extensively and veteran Corona developers are very familiar with it’s application.

Sometimes, however, we paint ourselves into a corner and we end up need to hack the call of a touch function without an actual touch taking place. This begs the question: why would you ever need this? Why wouldn’t you just have the function of the exist outside the scope of the touch function, and call it as needed?

Well, “From the Forum” isn’t about poking holes, it’s about providing knowledge! A situation may arise where you need the above functionality, and we’re not here to judge. Head down to the original thread below to read a bit more on this topic, and how you can get the touch functions working for you!

3. Tile tip for Windows Phone aficionados

Granted, this next tip isn’t going to be for everyone. Not everybody wants to expand their app portfolio to the Windows Phone platform for whatever reason. But for those of you that do, I salute you with the following tip!

Recently a developer was running into issues generating the tiles needed for apps developed for Windows Phone. Corona engineer Joshua Quick came out with a great resource for the exact names and resolutions for the icons that Windows Phone needs. Check it out at the original thread below.
